In Amsterdam, you can easily get anywhere by public transport. Trams in particular are very easy to reach and run a lot.
To pay for public transport, you can:

Maar makkelijker, sneller en (met een paar ritten) ook goedkoper is met de OV-chipkaart. - OV-chipkaart, the official OV card valid throughout the Netherlands. You buy a blank / anonymous chip card for €7.50 that you can top up with your bank card or credit card, no cash. You then check in and out yourself when getting on and off the train and pay only for the distance travelled.
